Magh Mela Clash Sparks Outrage
Shankaracharya’s disciple alleges mistreatment, seeks CM’s intervention
January 21, 2026: Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand’s disciple, Das Vishwanand Brahmachari, has alleged severe mistreatment by administrative authorities during the Magh Mela, recounting his experience in an interaction with ABP News. Brahmachari said that while he and other disciples were performing a ritualistic bath at the Sangam on Muni Amavasya, they were subjected to unprovoked brutality despite being unarmed and engaged only in religious observance. He claimed sacred symbols such as the Shikha and the Gayatri thread were disrespected, causing deep religious hurt.
A photograph from the incident went viral, intensifying outrage among followers. In protest, Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand has reportedly refused to enter his camp, choosing to remain outside until his demands are addressed. Other disciples described the episode as a planned conspiracy and accused the administration of disregarding established religious protocols during the sacred event.
The incident has triggered a wider debate on religious freedom and administrative accountability. Disciples have appealed to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to intervene, urging authorities to respect spiritual traditions and Vedic customs. Brahmachari emphasised that even legal and administrative actions must uphold the sanctity of spiritual leaders, as discussions continue nationwide over balancing governance with religious sensitivities.
