Mahakumbh Latest: Stampede at Prayagraj Leaves 30 Dead, 60 Injured

Amid massive crowds for Mauni Amavasya, chaos at Triveni Sangam disrupts Amrit Snan preparations.

A tragic stampede at the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj claimed over 30 lives and left 60 injured on Wednesday. The incident occurred at the Triveni Sangam as large crowds gathered for a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vaibhav Krishna confirmed the death toll and reported that 25 victims have been identified so far.

The stampede unfolded as thousands of devotees thronged the ghats for the sacred Amrit Snan ritual, creating an overwhelming rush. Police and medical personnel acted swiftly to bring the situation under control and provide aid to the injured. Images from the scene show officers carrying injured individuals to safety.

DIG Vaibhav Krishna assured the public that the situation has been stabilized and that scheduled rituals will continue. He added that the Juna Akhara, along with two other Akharas, would proceed with the Amrit Snan at the Sangam under strict safety protocols.

In response to the tragedy, the Uttar Pradesh government launched a helpline (1920) to assist those searching for missing family members. Authorities have urged calm among the devotees and reiterated their commitment to ensuring safety at the event.

Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev also addressed the crowd, advising devotees to perform their Amrit Snan at nearby ghats. He emphasized that the flow of water from the Sangam would reach every ghat in Prayagraj, ensuring the sanctity of the ritual.

This tragic event has cast a shadow over the Mahakumbh, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, as devotees mourn the loss of lives amid the spiritual observance.
