Maharashtra Transport Hike: Bus Fares Increased by 14.95%, Auto and Taxi Base Fares Also Revised

Public transport users in Maharashtra to pay more as bus, auto, and taxi fares are revised. Here’s what you need to know.

January 25, 2025: Mumbai: Passengers in Maharashtra are set to experience a surge in transport costs as the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) implements a 14.95% hike in bus fares. The increase, effective from Saturday, follows the pricing formula determined by the Hakim Committee. This fare adjustment applies to all routes operated by MSRTC, which manages a vast fleet of 15,000 buses that serve approximately 55 lakh passengers daily.

Key Changes in Public Transport Fares

  • MSRTC Buses: A 14.95% fare increase has been introduced across all routes.
  • Auto Rickshaws: The base fare has increased from ₹23 to ₹26.
  • Black-and-Yellow Taxis: Base fare revised from ₹28 to ₹31.
  • Blue-and-Silver AC Cool Cabs: The fare for the first 1.5 kilometers now stands at ₹48, up from ₹40.

The revised fares for autos and taxis will only come into effect once the meters are recalibrated to reflect the changes.

Western Railway’s Jumbo Block Update

Simultaneously, the Western Railway initiated a three-day jumbo block from January 24 to January 26, 2025, to facilitate the construction of a bridge between Bandra and Mahim. The block, which operates from 11 PM to 8:30 AM each day, has caused rescheduling of several long-distance trains:

  • Vande Bharat Express: Mumbai Central-Gandhinagar service now departs at 6:15 AM on January 25.
  • Gujarat Superfast Express: Rescheduled to depart at 6:40 AM on January 25.
  • Shatabdi Express: New departure time is 6:30 AM on January 25.
  • Bhusaval-Dadar Special: Partially cancelled between Borivali and Dadar on January 25.

These adjustments, shared via Western Railway’s official updates, aim to minimize disruption while ensuring infrastructure development.
