Make Anti-National Remarks, Get Arrested! Student, Retired Teachers, Lawyer Among 19 Arrested

Arrests across Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya follow social media posts deemed anti-national after the Kashmir attack that killed 26; sedition and NSA charges considered.

April 27, 2025: Guwahati:
At least 19 individuals have been arrested across Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya for allegedly making anti-national remarks following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, including a Navy officer and an Intelligence Bureau officer.

Those arrested include a sitting MLA, a journalist, students, a lawyer, and retired teachers. Most of the arrests were made based on social media posts critical of India or expressing support for Pakistan.

Arrests in Assam:

  • 14 people have been arrested in Assam so far.
  • The first to be arrested was Aminul Islam, an MLA from All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), who was charged with sedition after suggesting that the Pulwama (2019) and Pahalgam (2025) attacks were “government conspiracies.” He was remanded to four days’ police custody.

  • Md Jabir Hussain (journalist) from Hailakandi
  • Md AK Bahauddin (computer science student at Assam University, Silchar)
  • Md Javed Mazumder (lawyer) from Silchar
  • Md Mahahar Mia from Morigaon
  • Md Sahil Ali from Sivasagar
  • Md Musta Ahmed alias Sahel from Karimganj (for posting “Pakistan Zindabad” on Facebook)

Additional arrests were made on Saturday, including:

  • Md Jarif Ali,
  • Anil Bania, district secretary of the Satra Mukti Sangram Parishad,
  • Sumon Mazumdar alias Bulbul Alom Mazumdar from Hailakandi,
  • Mashud Azhar from Nagaon,
  • One individual from Hajo near Guwahati.

The Cachar district police also arrested two others for similar offenses.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned that those deemed anti-national could face action under the National Security Act (NSA).
“Bharat and Pakistan are enemy nations. We must always remain that way,” Sarma asserted.


Arrests in Tripura:

  • Four individuals were arrested in Tripura, including:
    • Jawhar Debnath and Kuldip Mandal (both retired teachers) from Dhalai district,
    • Sajal Chakraborty (retired teacher) from Dharmanagar, North Tripura,
    • Jahirul Islam from Sonamura, Sepahijala district.

All were accused of making “anti-national comments” online related to the Pahalgam incident.


Arrest in Meghalaya:

  • In Meghalaya, Simon Shylla (30) was arrested from East Khasi Hills district after posting an anti-national comment on a news channel’s video from Guwahati.
