Daily wage worker’s death in Rohini sparks fresh civic safety concerns
February 11, 2026: A 32-year-old man, Birju Kumar, died after falling into an open sewer near Mahashakti Kali Temple in Begumpur, Sector 32, Rohini, highlighting once again the dangers posed by uncovered drains in Delhi. Originally from Samastipur in Bihar, Birju worked as a daily wage labourer in the city. The incident reportedly took place on Monday evening.
Police were informed about the accident only on Tuesday around 2:30 PM. Following the alert, teams from Delhi Police and the Fire Brigade reached the spot and began a rescue operation. After an extensive search, Birju Kumar was pulled out of the drain, but he had already succumbed.
The tragedy has reignited concerns over civic negligence and the persistent risks posed by unsafe and uncovered drains in the national capital. Authorities are expected to probe the delay in reporting the incident and examine whether adequate safety measures were in place in the area.
