Mass Baldness Strikes Three Maharashtra Villages: Water Pollution Suspected

“Panic as villagers lose hair within days; health officials rush to probe water contamination.”

January 9, 2025: A bizarre case of mass hair loss has left residents of three villages in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district panicked, with several people reportedly going bald within just a week. Health officials suspect water contamination caused by fertilisers as the primary culprit.

The affected villages—Borgaon, Kalwad, and Hingna, located in the Shegaon tehsil—have reported alarming incidents of men and women losing tufts of hair over the last few days. Villagers described how a gentle pull could uproot hair, leaving bald patches that spread rapidly.

Concerned by the crisis, the district health department dispatched a team to investigate. Around 50 individuals have already been identified as victims of the condition, but officials fear the number may rise.

The health team collected water, hair, and skin samples from the affected areas to determine the cause of the sudden hair loss. Initial assessments suggest the possibility of polluted water as a contributing factor, though other health issues have not been ruled out.

“We suspect the issue might be linked to water pollution caused by fertilisers,” said Dr. Deepali Rahekar, a health officer who visited the villages. “We are testing the collected samples and will provide a conclusive explanation soon. Meanwhile, villagers are advised to take necessary precautions for their health.”

Visuals from the villages show distressed residents demonstrating the ease with which hair is being uprooted and pointing out the bald spots that appeared almost overnight. Local doctors have emphasized the need for proper health care while awaiting test results.

The incident has triggered widespread concern, with authorities working urgently to identify and mitigate the root cause of the crisis.
