Massive Fire Guts 30 Stalls at Delhi’s Iconic Dilli Haat; No Casualties Reported

Fire breaks out late evening at the popular crafts and cuisine hub; traders suffer heavy losses, but timely evacuation prevents injuries.

New Delhi, May-1:
A major fire broke out at Dilli Haat, one of Delhi’s most popular arts, crafts, and cultural markets, located in South Delhi’s INA area, on Wednesday evening. The blaze erupted around 8:55 PM, according to the Delhi Fire Service.

While no casualties or injuries were reported, officials confirmed that approximately 25 to 30 stalls were completely destroyed in the fire. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

“The fire has been brought under control. Thankfully, there are no injuries,” said Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra in a post on X at 9:51 PM. He added that he was personally heading to the site.


Scenes of Chaos and Loss:

Dramatic visuals from the site showed thick plumes of smoke engulfing the market as people rushed to evacuate. A visitor who witnessed the incident described the scene as one of panic and confusion, with people running toward the exits as the flames spread rapidly.

“We saw shops being reduced to ashes… the entire area was in chaos,” said one shopkeeper, holding back tears. Several traders reported losing goods worth crores.

Dilli Haat is renowned for showcasing handicrafts and cuisines from across India, offering a platform to artisans and small businesses from different states. Fire officials confirmed that stalls from multiple states were affected, potentially impacting artisans’ livelihoods and upcoming festival sales.

Besides crafts, the market also hosts regional food stalls, drawing both local and international tourists.
