NIA Launches Probe After Violent Siege at BDO Office

April 4, 2026: A shocking incident unfolded in Malda, where judicial officers were trapped and attacked by a mob at the Mothabari-II BDO office. What began as routine work quickly turned chaotic when seven officers, including three women, found themselves surrounded by protesters demanding inclusion in the voter list. As tensions escalated, the crowd allegedly blocked exits, leaving the officials confined inside the building for several hours.

The situation worsened through the day, forcing the officers to take shelter on the second floor for safety. Protesters, including groups of women, reportedly sat at the gate, preventing any movement. Former Chief Electoral Officer Debasis Sen termed the incident “shocking,” stressing the importance of maintaining law and order. Police eventually intervened and rescued the officials, but the escape turned violent as bricks were allegedly hurled at their vehicles during evacuation.

Following the incident, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched a detailed probe, deploying a 24-member team to investigate the attack. The team inspected key locations, including the BDO office and the site of the vehicle assault, while senior officials, including Inspector General Sonia Singh, are overseeing the investigation. The episode has raised serious concerns over security and administrative functioning in the region.
