Mumbai Drenched: Heavy Rain and Waterlogging as Red, Orange Alerts Issued Across City

The IMD has placed eight weather stations in Mumbai on red alert, with more rainfall and thunderstorms forecast throughout the week.

May 26, 2025: Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall late Sunday night, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts for several parts of the city and its suburbs. The downpour led to significant waterlogging, causing disruptions to traffic flow.

As of early Monday morning, around 3 am, the IMD updated on X (formerly Twitter) that light to moderate rainfall would continue for the next 3-4 hours in Mumbai and surrounding areas.

Heavy Rain, Alerts Issued
Eight weather stations in Mumbai — Borivali, Santacruz, Powai, Mulund, Chembur, Worli, Colaba, and Alibag — are under red alert for Monday. Neighbouring Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan are under orange alert.

The IMD has forecast a “generally cloudy sky with heavy rain” for Monday, with temperatures ranging from a minimum of 24°C to a maximum of 31°C. The weekly outlook for Mumbai shows rain will likely persist throughout the week.

Weather System Over Maharashtra
According to the IMD, a well-marked low-pressure area was positioned over south Madhya Maharashtra and adjoining Marathwada and North Interior Karnataka on Sunday, May 25. This system is expected to move eastwards within the next 24 hours and then weaken.

Meanwhile, the IMD forecast for Madhya Maharashtra is an orange alert on Monday, predicting very heavy rain with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

Raigad district has been placed under red alert, with IMD’s nowcast warnings indicating moderate thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, accompanied by maximum surface wind speeds. Thane and Palghar districts are under orange alert.

Southwest Monsoon Arrives Early
The IMD confirmed the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Maharashtra on Sunday, marking the earliest onset in 35 years. The monsoon is now expected to advance to Mumbai and other parts of the state over the next three days.

IMD scientist Sushma Nair stated that the last time the monsoon reached Maharashtra this early was on May 20, 1999. Kerala also saw an early onset on Saturday, compared to the usual June 1 arrival.

Monsoon expert M Rajeevan explained that such early onsets are not rare, adding that current active monsoon conditions will likely continue until June 2, helping the monsoon to advance further across Maharashtra and eastward.
