The Colaba observatory, the city’s key weather station, recorded a staggering 295 mm of rainfall, breaking a 1918 record of 279.4 mm. Meanwhile, other parts of Mumbai also received substantial rainfall: Santacruz (55 mm), Bandra (68.5 mm), Juhu Airport (63.5 mm), Chembur (38.5 mm), Vikhroli (37.5 mm), Mahalaxmi (33.5 mm), and Sion (53.5 mm) between 8:30 am and 11 am.

The IMD confirmed that the southwest monsoon advanced into Mumbai on May 26, much ahead of its usual June 11 arrival date. IMD scientist Sushma Nair described it as the “earliest onset in 75 years.”

Heavy rain and waterlogging caused significant disruption in the city, with visuals showing pedestrians wading through inundated roads. The IMD upgraded its alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri from orange to red, cautioning residents of continued heavy rainfall.

The early arrival of the monsoon was part of a broader pattern, with IMD stating that it has advanced over several parts of central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, parts of the Bay of Bengal, and northeastern states.

As the southwest monsoon sweeps in, the city is bracing for continued wet spells and heavy showers through the coming days.
