Mumbai’s Newly-Inaugurated Worli Metro Station Flooded As Early Monsoon Hits City

Inundated platforms, leaky roofs at Mumbai’s Worli underground station highlight drainage woes amid city’s early monsoon downpour

May 26, 2025: Mumbai’s newly inaugurated Worli underground metro station was left waterlogged as heavy rainfall lashed the city, marking an early start to the monsoon. Videos show the station’s platforms completely submerged in muddy water, forcing commuters to wade through ankle-deep slush with folded pants and slippers. Leaks in the station roof were also observed, as water dripped down onto the platforms, exposing serious drainage shortcomings at the station that was launched just weeks ago, on May 10.

The visuals have prompted questions over the quality of infrastructure of the Mumbai Metro Line 3, which stretches from Bandra-Kurla Complex to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli. Taking a swipe at the situation, a user on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “We are idiots. They were serious when they named it Aqua Line.”

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the southwest monsoon arrived in Maharashtra on Sunday, making it the earliest onset in 35 years. Mumbai and surrounding coastal areas are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next seven days. According to weather officials, Nariman Point received 40 mm of rainfall between 6 and 7 am today, while Grant Road, Colaba, and Byculla also recorded significant downpours.

The heavy rains have also disrupted flight and train operations across Mumbai. Airlines, including SpiceJet and Air India, have urged passengers to check flight statuses before heading to the airport as delays continue.
