Naravane Backs Publisher Amid Memoir Controversy

Penguin Random House says Four Stars of Destiny is not published; warns against illegal circulation

February 10, 2026: Former Army Chief General (Retd) MM Naravane has backed his publisher Penguin Random House India (PRHI) amid the controversy surrounding his unpublished memoir Four Stars of Destiny. In his first reaction since the issue erupted, Naravane shared the publisher’s official clarification on X, writing, “This is the status of the book.” PRHI reiterated that while the memoir was announced and listed for pre-order, it has not been formally published and is yet to receive mandatory clearances.

The publisher clarified that no copies of the book — in print or digital form — have been published, distributed, or sold. It warned that any circulation of the memoir at this stage would amount to copyright infringement. The clarification comes after reports of alleged PDF versions of the book being circulated, prompting concerns over unauthorised access to the material.

Delhi Police is now probing the alleged illegal circulation of the memoir, a controversy that intensified after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi cited purported excerpts from the book in the Lok Sabha. PRHI asserted that it holds exclusive publishing rights to Four Stars of Destiny and said any unauthorised copies, in any format, could invite legal action. The publisher also explained that an announced title, a pre-order listing, and a published book are distinct stages, underlining its commitment to transparency in the publishing process.
