Navratri 2025 Day 5: Devotees Worship Maa Skandamata, The Goddess of Motherly Strength and Salvation

On the fifth day of Chaitra Navratri, devotees honor Maa Skandamata, the nurturing form of Goddess Durga who symbolizes wisdom, compassion, and divine motherhood.

New Delhi, April 3, 2025: As Chaitra Navratri reaches its fifth day, devotees across India offer prayers to Maa Skandamata, the fifth manifestation of Goddess Durga. The day holds deep spiritual significance, celebrating the divine mother who gave birth to Lord Kartikeya (Skanda), the God of War, and supported his battle against the demon Tarakasura.

Maa Skandamata is revered for her maternal strength and unconditional love, often depicted seated on a lotus flower with her infant son Skanda on her lap and a lion as her mount. Her name translates to “Mother of Skanda,” and she embodies serenity, protection, and the power to bless devotees with both worldly and spiritual fulfillment.

🔱 The Legend Behind Maa Skandamata

According to Hindu mythology, the powerful demon Tarakasura received a boon that only the son of Lord Shiva could kill him. To restore peace to the universe, Maa Parvati gave birth to Lord Skanda and nurtured him until he was ready to lead the divine forces into battle. Her form as Skandamata represents not just the nurturing mother, but also the silent power behind cosmic balance.

🌼 Significance and Worship Rituals

Devotees wake early, wear yellow attire—the color of the day—and offer yellow flowers, especially marigolds, to the Goddess. Bananas and jaggery are popular offerings, as they are believed to please the divine mother.

Key rituals include:

  • Chanting the mantra:
    ॐ देवी स्कन्दमातायै नमः
    (Om Devi Skandamatayai Namah)
  • Performing aarti and meditation
  • Offering yellow sweets and fruits
  • Lighting a diya (lamp) with pure ghee

Worshiping Maa Skandamata is said to activate the Vishuddha Chakra (throat chakra), enhancing communication, purity of thought, and spiritual clarity.

🌍 Community Celebrations

Temples across India, especially in Varanasi, Delhi, Gujarat, and West Bengal, witnessed vibrant celebrations and rituals. Devotees gathered for special aartis, bhajans, and kirtans, praying for peace, prosperity, and protection for their families.

🧘 Spiritual Message

Maa Skandamata’s worship encourages devotees to embrace motherhood, compassion, and inner strength. She is especially revered by parents and those seeking wisdom and spiritual growth.
