February 16, 2025: New Delhi: A deadly stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) on Saturday night claimed at least 18 lives, including 11 women and four children, while dozens were injured. The chaos erupted as thousands of passengers rushed to board trains to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh, which has already drawn over 50 crore devotees.

What Led to the Stampede?

📌 Train Delays: Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express were delayed, forcing their passengers to wait.
📌 Maha Kumbh Rush: The special Prayagraj Express was set to depart at 10:10 PM, attracting a massive crowd.
📌 Ticket Surge: 1,500 general tickets were sold every hour, causing platforms 12-16 to overflow.
📌 Panic & Rumours: False information about train platform changes led to passengers rushing towards the escalators, resulting in a stampede.

Government’s Response

🔹 President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep anguish, offering condolences and prayers for the injured.
🔹 Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “distressing”, assuring government assistance to victims’ families.
🔹 A high-level probe has been ordered by the Ministry of Railways to investigate the cause of the disaster.
