New Traffic Restrictions in Prayagraj Ahead of Maha Kumbh’s Next Big Snan

Authorities impose traffic curbs to manage crowd surge on Maghi Purnima Snan after recent stampede tragedy

February 11, 2025: Prayagraj is set to witness a massive influx of devotees on February 12 for the Maghi Purnima Snan, one of the six sacred bathing days of the Maha Kumbh. In anticipation, authorities have implemented strict traffic restrictions to ensure smooth movement and avoid overcrowding, especially in the wake of the recent stampede on January 29, which claimed at least 30 lives.

The fair area has been a no-vehicle zone since 4 AM on Tuesday, with further restrictions extending citywide from 5 PM onwards. Special parking zones have been designated for vehicles arriving from outside the city, ensuring organized movement. Essential and emergency services, however, are exempt from these rules.

Additionally, the traffic restrictions will also apply to Kalpvasis, devotees who reside near the Sangam for the duration of the Kumbh.

CM Yogi Adityanath Reviews Arrangements

On Monday night, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a high-level meeting with police and civic officials to review crowd and traffic management strategies. He emphasized efficient parking utilization for over 5 lakh vehicles and stressed that traffic congestion must be prevented at all costs.

A three-member judicial panel has been set up to investigate the January 29 stampede, with a report expected within a month. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has announced a compensation of ₹25 lakh for families of the victims.

The Maha Kumbh, recognized as the world’s largest religious gathering, began on January 13 and will continue until February 26. As of February 10, over 44.74 crore pilgrims have already visited the holy event.
