The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to London, crashed just 32 seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. The aircraft slammed into the BJ Medical College hostel, killing 241 people on board, including two pilots and ten cabin crew members. One of the passengers was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
Ramesh was seated in seat 11A, near the emergency exit, which likely played a crucial role in his survival. Speaking to Doordarshan, Ramesh recounted the horrifying ordeal:
“For a while, I thought I was about to die. But when I opened my eyes, I saw I was alive. I unfastened my seat belt and got out of there. The airhostess and aunty-uncle all died before my eyes.”
He explained that he did not land on the upper floors of the hostel but managed to escape through a gap on the ground floor. “The building wall was on the opposite side and I don’t think anyone else came out that way,” he said.
Describing the crash, Ramesh added:
“A minute after take-off, it felt like the plane had got stuck. Then green and white lights came on. They tried to raise the plane but it went full speed and crashed into the building.”
Initial investigations suggest the plane suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure shortly after takeoff, but official findings are still pending. Meanwhile, DNA identification efforts are underway to help grieving families recover the remains of loved ones.
This marks one of the deadliest aviation disasters in Indian history. The miraculous survival of Ramesh amid the carnage stands in stark contrast to the overwhelming tragedy, sparking both awe and sorrow across the nation.
