Newlywed Shubham Dwivedi Among Victims of Pahalgam Terror Attack; Grief Spreads Across India

Tragic loss hits families from UP, Maharashtra, Odisha, Gujarat, and Haryana as terror strike in Kashmir’s Pahalgam kills multiple tourists and a young Navy officer.

Kanpur / New Delhi | April 23, 2025:
The terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday has claimed the life of Shubham Dwivedi, a young man from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, who had been married just over two months ago. Shubham had travelled to Kashmir for a short vacation with his wife but was shot in the head during the attack.

His cousin, Saurabh Dwivedi, told ANI,

“Shubham Bhaiya was married on February 12. My sister-in-law called to inform us he was shot in the head after terrorists reportedly asked for names.”


Victims from Across India

The Pahalgam attack, one of the deadliest since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, has left behind shattered families across multiple states.

  • Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, a 26-year-old Indian Navy officer from Karnal, Haryana, was also killed. He had just gotten married on April 16 and was on leave for his honeymoon.
  • Dilip Desale, a resident of Panvel, Maharashtra, lost his life in the same incident.
  • Prashant Satpathy, an Accounts Officer from Odisha, was killed. His family is still awaiting news about the whereabouts of his wife and young son who were traveling with him.
  • Shailesh Kadatiya, 44, from Surat, Gujarat, was also gunned down while vacationing with his wife and two children, who survived the incident.

The grief is widespread as families grapple with the sudden loss of their loved ones.


Nationwide Condemnation and Mourning

The attack, which claimed over two dozen lives, triggered mass candlelight vigils and protests across Jammu and Kashmir. Taxi drivers in Pahalgam held a march condemning the violence.

“This isn’t just about tourists; it’s about our families and livelihood. We consider them our own,” said Gulzar Ahmad Wani, president of the Pahalgam Taxi Association.


Political and National Response

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, cutting short his Saudi Arabia visit.

“Those responsible will be brought to justice. Our resolve to fight terrorism will only grow stronger,” he posted on X.

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also cut short her overseas visit to return to India.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security meeting after arriving in Srinagar Tuesday evening.

A search operation has been launched by the Indian Army and J&K Police in the Baisaran region of Anantnag to trace the attackers.


Evacuation Measures for Tourists

Deputy CM of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, confirmed that five tourists from the state have died and requested Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu to facilitate emergency evacuation flights for stranded individuals. The Minister assured swift action upon receiving passenger details.
