Inconsistencies in affidavits raise questions ahead of Tamil Nadu Assembly polls

April 3, 2026: Actor-turned-politician Vijay, who leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has come under scrutiny after discrepancies surfaced in his election affidavits filed for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Vijay, who plans to contest all 234 seats through his party, submitted nominations from Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East) on consecutive days. However, differences in the disclosures made in the two filings have triggered concerns about compliance with election rules.

In his Perambur nomination filed on March 30, Vijay stated that no criminal cases were pending against him. But in the affidavit submitted a day later for Tiruchirappalli (East), he acknowledged cases registered at the Peravallur police station in Chennai, including one related to an alleged disturbance during a campaign event in Kolathur. While this particular case was registered after his first filing and may not impact it legally, a separate case linked to a 2025 event in Madurai was disclosed only in the second affidavit, raising questions about incomplete disclosure.

The omission of the Madurai case from the earlier filing has sparked debate, with experts warning that failure to provide full information could lead to the rejection of his Perambur nomination. Some observers believe legal recourse, such as approaching the Madras High Court, could have helped avoid such discrepancies. With Tamil Nadu set to vote on April 23 and results due on May 4, the controversy adds uncertainty to Vijay’s much-anticipated political debut.
