Guwahati-Chennai flight with 168 passengers diverted amid mid-air emergency; crew derostered pending investigation
June 21, 2025 – An IndiGo flight from Guwahati to Chennai with 168 passengers on board was forced to make an emergency landing in Bengaluru after the pilots declared a ‘mayday’ distress call due to critically low fuel, sources confirmed. The aircraft landed safely at 8:20 PM on Thursday at Kempegowda International Airport, and all passengers are safe.
The mid-air scare comes just over a week after the tragic crash of an Air India Dreamliner in Ahmedabad, further intensifying concerns around aviation safety.

🛬 Crew Taken Off Duty, Investigation Underway
Sources said the Air Traffic Control (ATC) responded swiftly to the distress call and alerted medical and fire services, who were ready on the ground. The IndiGo pilots have been derostered, as per standard post-incident procedure, pending a thorough investigation into the fuel situation and flight route.
🛑 Second Incident in 24 Hours
In a separate incident on Friday, an IndiGo flight bound for Madurai returned to Chennai after experiencing a technical snag mid-air. That flight, carrying around 68 passengers, landed safely, and all passengers were deplaned following safety protocols.

✈️ Recent String of Aviation Alarms
This emergency marks the second serious alert involving IndiGo in two days, and follows close on the heels of the June 12 Air India crash, in which a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner burst into flames shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, tragically crashing into residential buildings.
While the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has yet to comment on the IndiGo incidents, aviation experts suggest a review of fuel planning protocols and emergency readiness may be warranted across airlines.
