ONGC Caps Gas Well After Konaseema Fire

Blowout at Mori-5 well brought under control in five days, no casualties reported

January 10, 2026: The fire triggered by a gas blowout at an ONGC-owned well in Andhra Pradesh’s Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district was fully extinguished on Saturday morning. District Joint Collector T Nisanthi confirmed that the blowout had been completely brought under control, with technical teams successfully capping the well after days of continuous effort.

The incident occurred on January 5 near Mori and Irusumanda villages, when a gas leak at the Mori-5 well led to a massive fireball rising nearly 20 metres high and spreading across a wide area. The well was being operated by ONGC’s Production Enhancement Contractor, Deep Industries Ltd. Following the disaster, ONGC’s senior management assumed direct operational control and deployed its Crisis Management Team to handle the emergency.

ONGC said its team managed to extinguish the fire and cap the well within just five days, calling it a rare global achievement in blowout control operations. The company said the task was carried out under extremely challenging conditions and highlighted that there was no loss of life or injury. The operation, ONGC said, reflected its technical expertise, preparedness, and commitment to safety and operational excellence.
