Opposition Moves Motion Against Om Birla

Congress-led bloc seeks No-Confidence resolution over Lok Sabha Speaker’s conduct

March 10, 2026: Opposition MPs led by the Indian National Congress are set to move a No-Confidence Motion against Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. According to reports, 118 MPs from opposition parties have signed the resolution, alleging “partisan” behaviour by the Speaker after Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was reportedly not allowed to speak in the House. The motion will be taken up only if the House grants permission to proceed with the resolution.

Sources said Kiren Rijiju, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister, will begin the discussion on the matter. Several senior MPs including Anurag Thakur, Nishikant Dubey, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Bhartruhari Mahtab and Chirag Paswan are expected to speak during the debate. Meanwhile, Congress MPs such as Gaurav Gogoi, Manish Tewari, Deepender Singh Hooda and Jothimani will present arguments supporting the resolution.

In addition to the debate, Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to present a statement on Supplementary Demands for Grants for 2025–26 in both Houses of Parliament. The Rajya Sabha will also continue discussions on the functioning of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Rural Development Ministry. Earlier, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar informed Parliament that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring the evolving situation in West Asia and that advisories have been issued to Indians living in Iran.
