Pakistan Fires Across International Border in Jammu and Kashmir, India Responds Swiftly

Tensions escalate after Pakistan opens fire in J&K’s Pargawal sector; India retaliates amid rising hostilities following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack.

April 30, 2025: Major Escalation By Pakistan: Firing Along International Border in J&K’s Pargawal Sector, India Retaliates

In a serious escalation of cross-border tensions, the Pakistan Army opened fire across the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pargawal sector, late Monday night. This comes amid continued ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) for the sixth consecutive day, further aggravating already strained ties between India and Pakistan following the recent Pahalgam terror attack.

According to defence sources, unprovoked small arms firing was also reported overnight in the Nowshera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor sectors. The Indian Army responded effectively, ensuring no breach of the country’s defensive posture.

These provocations mark some of the most significant ceasefire violations since the 2021 agreement to maintain peace along the LoC. The firing follows the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 civilians were gunned down at Baisaran meadow, a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir.

In response to the attack, India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, revoked all visas issued to Pakistani nationals, and shut down the Attari land transit post. Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed a decisive response, saying India would “identify, track, and punish” those responsible, extending that pursuit “to the ends of the earth.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar accused India of acting unilaterally and dismissed New Delhi’s allegations as “baseless.” He reiterated Pakistan’s offer for a neutral international probe and claimed his country remains a victim of terrorism.

The situation has drawn global concern. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke separately to India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, strongly condemning the Pahalgam attack and calling for accountability through lawful means. He emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate and offered the UN’s Good Offices to mediate and avoid confrontation.

With security at a flashpoint, the region remains on high alert as diplomatic and military channels brace for further developments.
