Patna HC Directs Congress Take Down Viral Video of PM Modi’s Mother

The Patna High Court has directed the Congress party to immediately remove a controversial AI-generated video featuring PM Modi’s late mother from all social media platforms.

September 17, 2025: The Patna High Court has directed the Congress party to immediately remove an AI-generated “deepfake” video featuring PM Modi’s late mother, Heeraben Modi, from all social media platforms. The order was issued by Acting Chief Justice P.B. Bajantari on Wednesday, following a political storm ignited by the video’s release.

The controversy began when the Bihar unit of the Congress party shared the AI-generated clip, which depicted a dreamlike conversation between a look-alike of PM Modi and an elderly woman resembling his late mother. In the video, the mother character is shown criticizing her son’s politics. The post was captioned, “Maa appears in sahab’s dreams. Watch an interesting interaction.”

The video sparked immediate and widespread condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, who accused the Congress of disrespecting the Prime Minister’s deceased mother. While the Congress has maintained that no disrespect was intended, the BJP filed a formal complaint.

An FIR was subsequently registered against unnamed persons within the Congress under multiple sections of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including sections related to defamation, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. The complaint was lodged by Sanket Gupta, a convenor of the BJP’s Delhi Election Cell. The Congress had previously faced criticism when an individual at a party rally in Bihar was seen hurling abuses at the Prime Minister and his mother.

The Patna High Court’s order is a significant development in the ongoing legal and political battle over the use of AI and deepfake technology in political campaigns, particularly as India gears up for upcoming elections. The Congress party has said it has initiated an internal inquiry to determine who was responsible for sharing the content.
