Planning a Himachal Road Trip? Subzero Temps, Snowfall, and Slippery Roads Await Travellers-Watch
December 11, 2024: Himachal Pradesh is embracing its first major snow of the season, with Shimla and surrounding towns like Kufri and Fagu witnessing snowfall on Sunday. Higher-altitude regions, including Lahaul and Spiti districts, also experienced fresh snowfall, intensifying cold conditions across the state.
The plunging temperatures are setting new lows, with Tabo recording the coldest at minus 13.1 degrees Celsius. Other regions followed close behind:

Shimla recorded a minimum of 2.5°C, while places like Seobagh (0°C), Manali (0.2°C), Kufri (0.4°C), and Solan (0.5°C) hovered near freezing. Una was the warmest at 22.8°C, though still cooler than normal.
Tourist destinations in Lahaul and Spiti faced hazardous travel conditions as slippery roads caused accidents, with vehicles stuck in traffic at Khansar Mod and Sissu. The snowfall in these high-altitude tribal regions has disrupted traffic, prompting caution for travelers venturing into the area.
The Meteorological Department predicts continued snowfall and rainfall in mid and high-altitude areas through Tuesday. Snow and rain are expected across Lahaul and Spiti, Chamba, Kinnaur, Kangra, Shimla, and Kullu districts, with light precipitation in Solan, Sirmaur, Una, Bilaspur, Mandi, and Hamirpur.
The weather office also forecasts temperatures dropping further by 3-4°C in the coming days. A “yellow” warning for dense fog has been issued for Bhakra Dam Reservoir (Bilaspur) and Balh Valley (Mandi) until Wednesday, signaling reduced visibility.
With icy roads, freezing temperatures, and chances of snowfall, travelers planning road trips to Himachal Pradesh are advised to exercise caution. Ensure vehicles are well-equipped for winter driving conditions and check weather forecasts before embarking on the journey.
