March 11, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the Centre’s decision to change the state’s name from Kerala to Keralam was a moment of joy for Malayalis. Addressing the golden jubilee celebration of the Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha in Kochi, he praised the fishing community for its courage and dedication during the devastating 2018 Kerala floods, noting their vital role in rescue and relief efforts.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the Dheevara Sabha has been working for the rights and welfare of fishermen for the past 50 years. He said the Union government has also launched several initiatives to empower fishing communities across the country. Among these efforts, he mentioned the installation of more than 4,500 satellite-based transponders on fishing boats to improve safety for fishermen at sea.
Modi arrived at Cochin International Airport around 11.30 am and travelled by helicopter to a naval base before heading by road to Marine Drive Kochi for the event. The Prime Minister is on a visit to poll-bound Kerala to participate in multiple programmes, including the inauguration of the BJP-led NDA’s election convention.
