PM Modi to Inaugurate Game-Changing Z-Morh Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir On Today

“Strategic infrastructure project to boost year-round connectivity, tourism, and economic growth in the Himalayan region.”

January 13, 2025: Srinagar: Ahead of the highly anticipated inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reviewed the arrangements at the project site in Sonamarg, Ganderbal district. Accompanied by advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and Kangan MLA Mian Mehar Ali, Abdullah inspected the 6.4-kilometer tunnel and interacted with engineers and workers, lauding their dedication to completing this landmark infrastructure project.

Significance of the Z-Morh Tunnel:

The Z-Morh Tunnel, constructed at an altitude of 8,650 feet along the Srinagar-Leh Highway, ensures all-weather connectivity by bypassing landslide-prone and avalanche-prone areas. Built at a cost of over ₹2,400 crore, the project includes a safety egress tunnel and well-developed approach roads.

Chief Minister Abdullah emphasized the tunnel’s transformative potential, highlighting its role in creating year-round access to Sonamarg and complementing Gulmarg as a skiing and adventure sports hub. “The Z-Morh Tunnel will unlock new avenues for tourism and economic growth, positioning Ganderbal as a premier winter sports destination,” he said.


Prime Minister Modi’s Upcoming Visit:

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the tunnel on January 13, 2025. Following the inauguration, he will address a public gathering and meet the workers who braved extreme conditions to complete the project. Modi expressed his excitement about the visit on social media, stating, “The benefits for tourism and the local economy are immense.”

Strategic and Tourism Boost for the Region:

Beyond its strategic importance for defense logistics and trade, the tunnel is expected to transform Sonamarg into a year-round tourism hub. Plans to further enhance connectivity with the Zojila Tunnel, set for completion by 2028, promise to shorten travel times between Srinagar and Leh, catalyzing economic growth and fostering socio-cultural integration across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.

The Z-Morh Tunnel is being hailed as a significant step towards bolstering infrastructure and development in the Himalayan region, with the promise of transforming lives and livelihoods.
