PM Modi’s 2011 Tweet on Tahawwur Rana Resurfaces After Extradition to India-Goes Viral

As 26/11 accused Tahawwur Rana lands in Delhi after years of legal battle, a 14-year-old post by PM Modi slamming the US verdict goes viral, hailed by netizens as a sign of justice finally being served.

New Delhi, April 11 – Fourteen years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the US court’s handling of the Tahawwur Rana case, his old tweet has gone viral — just as the 26/11 accused was extradited to India from the US on Thursday evening.

“US declaring Tahawwur Rana innocent in Mumbai attack has disgraced the sovereignty of India & it is a major foreign policy setback,”
PM Modi had posted on X (formerly Twitter) in 2011, referencing a US court verdict that acquitted Rana of direct involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, while convicting him for supporting a banned terrorist organization.

The tweet is now being reshared across social media platforms, with users praising Modi for following through on his long-held stance.

“A leader who walks the talk. Captain my captain,” one user wrote.
“Modi hai toh mumkin hai,” echoed several others.

Extradition and Arrest

Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian national, arrived in Delhi on a special flight after exhausting all legal options to block his extradition. He has been placed under 18-day custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

His extradition was confirmed during PM Modi’s US visit in February 2025, where President Donald Trump reportedly assured Indian authorities of full cooperation.

Rana’s Alleged Role in 26/11

  • Rana is accused of facilitating and enabling key reconnaissance operations for the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, which killed 166 people.
  • His close associate and co-accused David Coleman Headley told investigators that he had Rana’s permission to set up a business front in Mumbai for planning the attacks.
  • Headley used a five-year visa arranged through Rana to visit India multiple times between 2007 and 2008 for terror planning.
  • Rana himself stayed at Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, one of the main targets, prior to the attacks.

According to officials, Rana had links with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and other terror groups. He was convicted in the US in 2013 and sentenced to 14 years, but released in 2020 on health grounds, only to be re-arrested after India’s extradition request.
