Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa claims over 32 AAP MLAs are in touch with him, hints at BJP’s involvement
February 24, 2025: The political landscape in Punjab is witnessing intense speculation as Pratap Singh Bajwa, the Leader of Opposition from the Congress, has made a startling claim that more than 32 MLAs from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are in contact with him. He further hinted that some leaders might also be in discussions with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), indicating that the Bhagwant Mann-led government may be on shaky ground.

Congress Denies Role, Blames BJP
Bajwa, however, clarified that Congress will not actively attempt to topple the AAP government, stating, “The BJP will do that.” He also alleged that AAP leaders are discontented due to financial mismanagement, particularly thousands of crores allegedly siphoned off to Australia and other states through hawala transactions linked to liquor deals and land-use changes.
“The Delhi model is designed for corruption, bringing in experts to loot,” Bajwa remarked, sharpening his attack on AAP.
AAP’s Counterattack: Bajwa Eyeing BJP Switch?
In response, AAP leader Neel Garg accused Bajwa of preparing to jump ship to the BJP, claiming that he had met senior BJP leaders in Bengaluru. He also suggested that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should keep a close watch on Bajwa.
Growing Pressure on AAP After Delhi Defeat
AAP has been under immense scrutiny since its heavy defeat in the Delhi elections earlier this month. In an attempt to salvage its credibility, the Punjab government has launched a major anti-corruption crackdown, fulfilling one of its key pre-poll promises.
- 52 police officers, including constables and inspectors, have been dismissed on corruption charges.
- Varinder Kumar, a senior 1993 batch IPS officer, was removed from his post as Chief Director of the Vigilance Bureau and reassigned.
- Sri Muktsar Sahib Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Tripathi, a 2016 batch IAS officer, was also suspended, with an official Vigilance Department inquiry ordered against him.
What’s Next? Will the AAP Government Survive?
With growing internal dissatisfaction within AAP, coupled with allegations of corruption and defections, the stability of the Bhagwant Mann government remains uncertain. If the BJP indeed engineers a political upheaval, Punjab could be headed for another dramatic shift in power.
