Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), December 19: Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav launched a sharp critique of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, accusing it of disrespecting former Minister of Law and Justice BR Ambedkar and attempting to undermine the Constitution.
Yadav’s comments came in response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks in the Rajya Sabha, which he claimed showcased the BJP’s “hatred” toward Ambedkar and the constitutional values he represented.
Taking to social media, Yadav lambasted the BJP, accusing them of harboring contempt for Ambedkar and his ideals.
“How will those whose hearts are filled with hatred run the country? What happened today is not just an insult to Babasaheb but also to the Constitution given by him. This is another extreme point of the negative mentality of the BJP,” he wrote.
Yadav asserted that the BJP views the Constitution as an obstacle to its intentions of exploiting marginalized groups.
“Today, the country has come to know how much bitterness the BJP people have towards Babasaheb. They see the Constitution as their biggest opponent because it shields the poor, deprived, and oppressed from their exploitation,” he added.
Yadav condemned the BJP’s stance, calling it “Totally reprehensible! Deeply worrying!! Highly objectionable!!!” He ended his post with a rallying cry: “Everyone says today, we don’t want BJP!”
The INDIA Bloc, led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, staged protests in Parliament premises, demanding Amit Shah’s resignation. Several MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Sanjay Raut, and Ram Gopal Yadav, donned blue outfits in homage to Ambedkar and marched to Makar Dwar, calling for Shah’s apology.
The protests coincided with a separate controversy involving BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi, who alleged he was injured after being pushed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during a scuffle in Parliament. Sarangi claimed another MP fell on him, causing a head injury. BJP MP Mukesh Rajput was also reportedly injured.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments in the Rajya Sabha sparked the controversy, reportedly stating, “If they had taken the name of God so many times instead of Ambedkar, they would have got heaven for seven lives.”
The remark, seen as derogatory by the Opposition, led to widespread outrage, with the Congress and other INDIA Bloc parties demanding accountability and calling the statement a direct insult to Ambedkar’s legacy.
As protests erupted outside Parliament, BJP MPs countered with demonstrations accusing Congress of “insulting Babasaheb Ambedkar.” Union Minister Giriraj Singh targeted the Gandhi family, alleging that while they received Bharat Ratnas, they failed to honor Ambedkar appropriately.
The escalating political clash has led to repeated disruptions in parliamentary proceedings, with both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourned multiple times.
