BJP returns to power in Delhi after 27 years with a sweeping victory, while AAP faces a major setback, losing key leaders including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia.

New Delhi, February 8:

In a historic political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stormed back to power in Delhi after 27 years, securing a massive victory in the assembly elections and ending Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule. Several senior AAP leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, suffered shocking defeats in their strongholds, paving the way for a BJP-led administration in the national capital.

BJP's Resounding Victory & AAP's Collapse

The BJP won 45 out of 70 seats and is leading in 3 more, while AAP managed just 21 wins, with one seat still in the balance. Congress failed to open its account for the third consecutive time, continuing its downward spiral in Delhi politics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed BJP’s victory, calling it a triumph of good governance and promising a new era of development for Delhi.

"Jana Shakti is paramount! Development wins, good governance triumphs. I bow to my dear sisters and brothers of Delhi for this resounding and historic mandate," Modi wrote on X.

"We will leave no stone unturned in developing Delhi, improving the overall quality of life for the people, and ensuring that Delhi plays a prime role in building a Viksit Bharat," he added.

Key Defeats & Wins: AAP Leaders Ousted, BJP Dominates

Among the biggest upsets of the election was Arvind Kejriwal’s defeat in New Delhi constituency to BJP’s Parvesh Verma by over 4,000 votes. Other major AAP losses include:

  • Manish Sisodia (Jangpura) – Lost to BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah by 675 votes.
  • Saurabh Bhardwaj (Greater Kailash) – Lost to BJP’s Neeraj Agarwal.
  • Somnath Bharti (Malviya Nagar) – Lost to BJP’s Arvind Kumar.
  • Satyendra Jain (Shakur Basti) – Lost to BJP’s Dr. Anil Goel.

The only major victory for AAP came from Atishi, who retained Kalkaji, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by over 3,500 votes.

BJP leaders who secured victories include:

  • Parvesh Verma (New Delhi)
  • Vijender Gupta (Rohini)
  • Kapil Mishra (Karawal Nagar)
  • Ravinder Singh Negi (Patparganj)
  • Kailash Gahlot (Bijwasan) – A former AAP leader who defected to BJP ahead of the polls.

Kejriwal Concedes Defeat, Promises Constructive Opposition

In a video message, Kejriwal accepted AAP’s defeat and congratulated BJP on their victory.

"We accept the mandate of the people with great humility. I congratulate the BJP and hope they fulfill their promises," Kejriwal said.

He emphasized that AAP would not abandon its role in Delhi politics and promised to serve the people despite being in opposition.

"We have done a lot in the fields of health, education, and infrastructure over the last 10 years. We will play a constructive opposition role and continue to serve the people," he added.

Amit Shah & BJP Leaders Celebrate Victory

Union Home Minister Amit Shah credited the win to Modi’s leadership, stating that BJP will fulfill its guarantees and transform Delhi.

"Delhi ke Dil mein Modi! This victory is proof of Delhiites' faith in Modi ji’s vision. Under his leadership, BJP is committed to making Delhi the No. 1 capital in the world," Shah wrote on X.

Exit Polls Proved Right, Congress Fails Yet Again

The election results aligned with exit poll predictions, which had anticipated a BJP victory. The Congress party failed to win a single seat for the third consecutive time, marking a complete wipeout for the former ruling party in Delhi.

What’s Next for Delhi? BJP’s Promises

With BJP set to form the government, Parvesh Verma outlined key priorities for the party’s governance:
✅ ₹2,500 per month for women
✅ Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe AAP’s alleged corruption
✅ Yamuna riverfront development
✅ Reducing pollution & traffic congestion
✅ Transforming Delhi into a world-class capital

As BJP prepares to form the next government, Delhi is set to witness a new political chapter after a decade under AAP rule.
