Priyanka Gandhi Slams Centre Over Parliament Deadlock as Lok Sabha Passes Finance and Boilers Bills

Congress MP accuses government of disrupting House proceedings; Finance Bill and Boilers Bill passed as JPC on One Nation, One Election gets extension

New Delhi, March 26: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticised the central government on Tuesday, claiming that the Opposition’s efforts to raise critical issues in Parliament are being deliberately thwarted. She alleged that the government was actively creating disruptions to avoid meaningful debate.

“For the first time, I’m witnessing a government that itself doesn’t want the House to function. The issues we want to raise aren’t even being discussed,” Priyanka, the MP from Wayanad, told ANI after attending a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the One Nation, One Election proposal.

Meanwhile, despite the political standoff, the Lok Sabha passed the Finance Bill 2025 and The Boilers Bill, 2024 on Tuesday. Additionally, the tenure of the JPC on One Nation, One Election was officially extended until the final week of the Monsoon Session 2025.

Finance Bill 2025: Vision for Viksit Bharat

Speaking in Parliament, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the Finance Bill 2025 aligns with India’s long-term development goals and aspirations of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

“We’ve attempted several reforms in this bill—simplification, tax certainty, and rationalisation for ease of doing business. It also offers unprecedented tax relief,” said Sitharaman.

She also mentioned steps taken to mobilise taxes, especially from holders of foreign assets, and addressed Opposition concerns on GST and taxation reforms.

While Opposition MPs criticised the bill, calling it “patchwork” and pointing out flaws in the GST regime, BJP members defended it, highlighting India’s GDP growth over the past decade.

Boilers Bill 2024: Boost for MSMEs and Industrial Safety

The Boilers Bill, 2024, aimed at improving industrial safety and enhancing Ease of Doing Business (EoDB), was passed by the Lok Sabha after approval in the Rajya Sabha.

Introduced by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, the bill proposes reforms to the existing Boilers Act, 1923, including:

  • Decriminalisation of minor offences
  • Executive penalties replacing judicial fines for non-criminal violations
  • Improved safety standards for workers and boiler repairs
  • Updated definitions and removal of obsolete provisions

Out of seven total offences under the Act, four serious ones retain criminal penalties due to the risk of loss of life and property.

JPC on One Nation, One Election Extended

The Lok Sabha also approved a motion moved by JPC Chairman P.P. Chaudhary to extend the committee’s tenure for reviewing the One Nation, One Election Bills:

  • Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024
  • Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024

The extension grants the JPC time until the first day of the last week of the Monsoon Session 2025 to present its report.
