Congress leader raises allegations over governance, resources, and welfare schemes during Nazira rally
April 1, 2026: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday launched a strong attack on Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP-led Assam government while addressing an election rally in Nazira. Campaigning for Congress candidate Debabrata Saikia, she alleged that the state’s resources were being controlled by a single family and claimed that key assets such as land and mines were being handed over to select industrialists. She also referred to past controversies, including the Sarada and NC Hills cases, to question the government’s track record.
Raising broader governance concerns, Gandhi criticised the state government over tea garden workers’ wages, stating that promised hikes had not been delivered. She also highlighted demands from several communities seeking Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, suggesting that their concerns remain unresolved. In addition, she alleged that women were being pressured to attend political rallies under the threat of losing benefits from welfare schemes like Orunodoi.
Targeting the Centre, Gandhi criticised Narendra Modi, claiming he was “influenced by the US,” and described Sarma as closely aligned with him. Her remarks come amid intensified campaigning ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, with political exchanges between parties growing sharper as polling day approaches.
