PT Usha’s Husband Vengalil Sreenivasan Passes Away

In a deeply saddening development for the Indian sporting community, Vengalil Sreenivasan, husband of legendary sprinter and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, passed away in the early hours of Friday, January 30, 2026. He was 67 years old.

Sreenivasan collapsed at their residence in Perumalpuram, Thikkodi (Kerala), at approximately 12:30 AM. Although he was rushed to a nearby private hospital, he could not be revived and was declared dead on arrival.


A Life of Quiet Support

Vengalil Sreenivasan was widely recognized as the “pillar of strength” behind PT Usha’s transition from a world-class athlete to a prominent sports administrator and Member of Parliament.

  • Background: A native of Ponnani, he was a former CISF Inspector and a talented kabaddi player in his younger years.
  • The “Usha School” Legacy: He played a pivotal role in the establishment and management of the Usha School of Athletics in Koyilandy, helping nurture the next generation of Indian track stars.
  • Family: He is survived by PT Usha and their son, Ujjwal.

The news has prompted a wave of tributes from across the country’s political and sporting landscapes:

  • PM Narendra Modi: The Prime Minister personally spoke to PT Usha on Friday morning to express his condolences, acknowledging Sreenivasan’s constant support throughout her journey.
  • Kiren Rijiju: The Union Minister expressed his deep sadness on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “He was widely regarded as her pillar of support and the driving force behind her many professional milestones.”
  • IOA & Athletes: Several members of the Indian Olympic Association and athletes from across India have reached out to support the “Payyoli Express” during this difficult time.

Mortal Remains and Rites

The final rites are expected to take place in their hometown in Kerala later today. Local reports indicate that several state leaders and sports personalities are expected to travel to Thikkodi to pay their last respects.
