Pune: In a heart-wrenching incident, three people, including two toddlers, lost their lives after a dumper truck ran over labourers sleeping on a footpath in Pune's Wagholi area around 12:30 AM on Monday.
The victims have been identified as Vaibhavi Pawar (1), Vaibhav Pawar (2), and Vishal Pawar (22). Six others, including more children and adults, sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to Sassoon General Hospital for treatment.
According to a senior police official, the accident occurred near Kesnand Phata where a group of laborers, mostly migrants from Amravati, were sleeping on the footpath. They had reportedly arrived in Pune on Sunday to work at construction sites in the area.
"The dumper truck veered off the road and plowed through the sleeping laborers. Immediate rescue operations were carried out, but three people succumbed to their injuries," said the official.
The truck driver has been detained by the authorities, and preliminary investigations suggest that he may have been under the influence of alcohol. Blood samples have been collected, and further investigations are ongoing to confirm intoxication levels.
The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents expressing their anger and sorrow. Many are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and better safety measures for vulnerable populations sleeping in public spaces.
Authorities have assured a thorough investigation and promised compensation for the victims' families.
The incident highlights the urgent need for addressing road safety lapses, drunk driving, and the vulnerability of migrant workers living in precarious conditions.
