Rahul Gandhi Questions PM’s Silence on IRIS Dena Sinking
Congress leader warns rising Iran-US tensions could threaten India’s energy security
March 5, 2026: Rahul Gandhi on Thursday criticised Narendra Modi for not issuing a public statement after reports that the Iranian warship IRIS Dena was sunk by the United States in the Indian Ocean. The Congress leader said the incident signals a dangerous escalation in global tensions and could affect India’s strategic interests. According to Gandhi, the conflict is unfolding close to India’s maritime neighbourhood, and the government’s silence raises concerns about the country’s diplomatic preparedness amid rising geopolitical uncertainty.
In a post on X, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha warned that worsening tensions in the region could directly impact India’s energy security. He pointed out that more than 40 per cent of India’s crude oil imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route connecting the Persian Gulf to global markets. Gandhi added that India also relies heavily on the same corridor for LPG and LNG shipments, making the country vulnerable to disruptions if hostilities intensify.
Referring to the sinking of the Iranian frigate in nearby waters, Gandhi said the situation demanded a clear strategic response from the government. He argued that India needs firm leadership during such volatile times and criticised the Prime Minister’s lack of public comment. The remarks come as tensions between Iran and United States continue to escalate, drawing global attention to the stability of key maritime trade routes.
