Rahul Gandhi Slams PM Modi Over Tech Policies, Calls for Stronger Industrial Base
New Delhi, February 15: Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched a fresh attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, criticizing his handling of technological advancements, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and drone technology.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi shared a video highlighting the transformational impact of drones in modern warfare, stressing that India is falling behind due to the Modi government's lack of a strong industrial vision.
“Drones have revolutionized warfare, combining batteries, motors, and optics to maneuver and communicate on the battlefield in unprecedented ways,” Gandhi wrote.
However, he pointed out that drones are not just a standalone technology but rather a product of bottom-up innovation driven by a strong industrial ecosystem. According to him, PM Modi has failed to recognize this crucial aspect, focusing more on speeches rather than actual progress.
“Our competitors are moving rapidly in these fields while PM Modi keeps giving speeches on AI,” he added, urging the need for real industrial strength instead of empty rhetoric.
🔸 Weak Industrial Growth – Gandhi argued that India lacks a robust production base, putting it at a disadvantage in the global tech race.
🔸 Dependency on Imports – He warned that India’s reliance on Chinese imports for key components like batteries, motors, and optics could jeopardize national security.
🔸 Failure of 'Make in India' – Citing data, he stated that the manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP has dropped from 15.3% in 2014 to 12.6%, the lowest in 60 years.
🔸 China’s Technological Lead – He noted that China has spent over a decade developing critical technologies, giving it a 10-year advantage over India in sectors like robotics, batteries, and optics.
📌 Align education policies to train a workforce skilled in emerging technologies.
📌 Encourage industrial innovation by enlisting experts and facilitating widespread investment.
📌 Strengthen trade and foreign policies to promote self-reliance in key industries.
📌 Reduce dependence on imports by building domestic production capabilities.
He stressed that India has the talent and scale to become a global leader in technology but needs a clear strategy to achieve it.
“India has immense talent, scale, and drive. We must have a clear vision and build real industrial prowess to give our youth jobs and lead India into the future,” he asserted.
Earlier this month, while participating in the motion of thanks on the President's Address in Lok Sabha, Gandhi emphasized that manufacturing is the backbone of national security. He warned that future wars will be fought between industrial systems, not just armies, making self-reliance in production critical.
“Although China is 10 years ahead, we can catch up with the right vision. An INDIA government would realign education, enlist experts, widely spread finance, and align our trade and foreign policies,” Gandhi said.
He also criticized the Modi government’s 'Make in India' initiative, claiming it has failed to revive India’s manufacturing sector.
With 2024 Lok Sabha elections on the horizon, Gandhi’s attack on Modi’s tech policies highlights a key political debate:
✔ Is India doing enough to boost its industrial and technological capabilities?
✔ Has ‘Make in India’ truly delivered on its promises?
✔ How should India prepare for the next era of industrial and digital warfare?
While the Modi government has championed AI and defense technology investments, the opposition is calling for deeper structural reforms to truly unlock India’s potential in the global tech race.
