Barmer records highest temperature in the country; Delhi sees its hottest night as IMD warns of severe heatwave across multiple states, with relief expected from April 10.
April 9, 2025: As the summer sun beats down harder than ever, parts of India are reeling under intense heatwave conditions. Rajasthan’s Barmer recorded a searing 46.4°C, making it the hottest spot in the country and exceeding the seasonal average by 7.6°C, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported.

Delhi has been placed under a “yellow alert” for Wednesday, with temperatures expected to peak at 41°C. The capital recorded its warmest night of the season at 25.6°C, nearly 7°C above normal. The heatwave in the Delhi-NCR region is being driven by dry winds and clear skies, with maximum temperatures soaring 4–6°C above normal.

According to the IMD, a heatwave is declared when the temperature exceeds 40°C in the plains and is at least 4.5°C above normal. A severe heatwave is when the deviation reaches 6.5°C or more, or if the temperature touches 45°C or higher.

🔥 Heatwave Conditions Across India
The scorching spell is not limited to Delhi and Rajasthan. 27 weather stations across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan recorded temperatures of 43°C or higher, with 19 of them under heatwave or severe heatwave warnings.
Rajasthan saw Jaisalmer at 45°C, Chittorgarh at 44.5°C, and Bikaner at 44.4°C, all well above their average seasonal highs.
In Gujarat, Surendranagar hit 44.8°C, while cities like Rajkot, Amreli, Mahuva, and Kandla recorded over 43°C. Maharashtra’s Akola topped at 44.1°C, followed closely by Nandurbar and Jalgaon. In Madhya Pradesh, Guna and Ratlam reached 43.4°C and 43.2°C respectively.
🌧️ Relief in Sight
The IMD forecast suggests that heatwave conditions are likely to ease in northwest India from April 10, and in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh from April 11.
On April 9, however, West Rajasthan is expected to remain under a severe heatwave. Scattered heatwave conditions may also affect East Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha.
Warm night conditions are likely to persist in isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada, and Madhya Maharashtra.
🌦️ Rainfall Forecast in South & Northeast India
Meanwhile, southern and northeastern India are bracing for light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 50 kmph.
States like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and parts of East and Northeast India will see sporadic showers until April 12.
An isolated hailstorm is expected in Bihar and Jammu & Kashmir on April 9. Heavy rain is likely in Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh on April 9 and 10.
