31 lives lost in Tamil Nadu tragedy; condolences pour in from across the political and film fraternity
Chennai, September 28: Tamil Nadu was gripped by shock and sorrow on Saturday after a tragic stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur claimed 31 lives and left several others injured. The heartbreaking incident has drawn condolences from film icons and political leaders alike, with superstar Rajinikanth leading the tributes.
Expressing his grief on X, Rajinikanth wrote, “The news of the loss of innocent lives in the incident that occurred in Karur shakes the heart and causes immense grief. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.”
The stampede occurred during TVK chief Vijay’s public rally when massive overcrowding triggered chaos. Several attendees fainted from suffocation and exhaustion, and many were rushed to nearby hospitals. Officials confirmed that overcrowding and lack of crowd control led to the deadly panic.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned the tragedy, calling it “deeply saddening.” In a heartfelt message, he wrote, “My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured.”
AIADMK General Secretary and Tamil Nadu Assembly Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami expressed shock and urged immediate relief. He revealed that he had instructed former minister MR Vijayabhaskar to visit the hospital and assist the injured. “The news that more than 29 people lost their lives and several others fainted is both shocking and distressing. On behalf of AIADMK, I extend my deepest condolences to the grieving families,” he said.
Palaniswami also directed AIADMK volunteers to form a human chain outside the crowded hospitals to ensure smooth medical assistance for victims and called on the DMK-led state government to guarantee proper treatment and compensation for the deceased families.
The incident has raised urgent concerns about safety measures at mass gatherings in Tamil Nadu. As families grieve and survivors recover, the spotlight is now on authorities to ensure accountability and prevent such tragedies in the future.
