Rarest of Rare Case: Kerala Woman Sentenced to Death for Poisoning Boyfriend to End Relationship

“Greeshma laced ayurvedic tonic with herbicide, leading to boyfriend’s death; Court rejects plea for leniency.”

January 20, 2025: In a landmark ruling, a 24-year-old woman named Greeshma was sentenced to death in Kerala for the 2022 murder of her boyfriend, Sharon Raj. The sentencing comes nearly two years after she poisoned the then 23-year-old Raj in an attempt to end their relationship.

The local court observed the gravity of the crime outweighed any consideration for the accused’s age or personal circumstances. Greeshma had sought leniency, citing her academic achievements, clean criminal record, and status as her parents’ only daughter.

According to the prosecution, Greeshma laced an ayurvedic tonic with paraquat, a deadly herbicide, which led to Raj’s death from multiple organ failure 11 days later. The court relied on circumstantial, digital, and scientific evidence to convict her.

Special Public Prosecutor VS Vineeth Kumar called the verdict “exemplary” and stated, “This is a rarest of the rare case, and the judgment reflects that.”

Greeshma had reportedly plotted the murder after Raj refused to end their relationship, despite her engagement to an army man from Tamil Nadu. Investigations revealed that Greeshma had previously attempted to poison Raj by mixing paracetamol tablets into fruit juice, but he refused to drink it due to its bitter taste.

Raj, a native of Parassala in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram district, was a BSc Radiology student.

The court also convicted Greeshma’s uncle, Nirmalakumaran Nair, for destroying evidence, while her mother was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
