Selection Process
- The BJP’s Parliamentary Board, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met earlier today to finalize the process.
- Ravi Shankar Prasad and Om Prakash Dhankar were appointed as observers for the meeting with newly elected BJP MLAs, who will elect their leader.
- The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Ramlila Maidan with three designated stages for the PM, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, and the new CM, along with invited MPs, MLAs, and religious leaders.
Front runners for Delhi’s Next CM post were
Parvesh Verma – Former MP and BJP’s key face in Delhi, who defeated Arvind Kejriwal.
Virendra Sachdeva – Delhi BJP President and a prominent leader.
Bansuri Swaraj – Daughter of the late Sushma Swaraj and a first-time MP.
Satish Upadhyay – A key Brahmin leader in the capital.
There was a buzz that the BJP may select a woman as CM, with names like Neelam Pahalwan, Rekha Gupta, Poonam Sharma, and Shikha Roy in consideration till finally Rekha Gupta’s name was zeroed down.
Caste & Political Considerations
The BJP is also factored in caste equations, similar to its CM selections in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in 2023. Four new MLAs belong to Scheduled Castes, adding further complexity to the decision.
Delhi Election Results: BJP’s Big Comeback
- The BJP won 48 of 70 seats, marking its return to power after 26 years.
- The AAP managed only 22 seats, down from 62 in 2020 and 67 in 2015.
- Arvind Kejriwal’s government was hit by corruption allegations, including the liquor excise policy and ‘sheeshmahal’ scandals.
Stay tuned for the official BJP announcement!
