Heavy Rainfall Wreaks Havoc, Roads Blocked, Power Outages Reported as Authorities Issue High Alert
Kullu, February 28: Heavy rains and flash floods have caused widespread destruction in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district, leading to landslides, road blockages, power outages, and halted traffic. Several vehicles have been trapped or swept away, while essential services like electricity and drinking water remain disrupted.
With water levels dangerously rising in rivers and drains, the district administration has issued a high alert and urged residents in low-lying areas to stay indoors.
“Many link roads and main roads on the left bank are blocked due to continuous rainfall for the last 15-16 hours. I request the public to remain where they are, as sudden landslides can further increase the water flow in rivers,” said Deputy Commissioner Kullu, Torul S Ravish.
Severe Disruptions: Schools Closed, Key Roads Blocked
🔹 Manali and Kullu remain cut off due to extensive damage to roads and power lines. Restoration work is underway.
🔹 One foot of snow has been reported in Manali, worsening the situation.
🔹 Schools and educational institutions remain closed due to adverse weather conditions.
🔹 Jalori National Highway is completely shut down.
Landslides Cause Extensive Damage
Multiple landslides have been reported, cutting off major roads and commercial areas.
“The flash flood started around 7 AM, blocking drains and diverting water into Gandhinagar and Shastrinagar markets, causing heavy losses,” said Kullu Municipal Council President Gopal Krishan Mahant.
Executive Officer Anubhav Sharma confirmed that the Akhara area, Sultanpur Palace road, Meat Market Road, and Lug Valley Chowk were severely impacted. PWD teams are working to clear blockages, but continued rainfall is hampering efforts.
Weather Alert: More Rain and Snowfall Expected
The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued a fresh alert for heavy rain and snowfall in multiple districts, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi. Authorities have advised extreme caution, especially in landslide-prone areas.
With ongoing relief efforts, officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors, and follow safety advisories until conditions improve.
