‘Ring of Fire’ Solar Eclipse Today

First solar eclipse of 2026 to dazzle parts of Africa and South America

February 17, 2026: The first major astronomical event of 2026 is set to unfold today as an annular solar eclipse — popularly known as the “Ring of Fire” — takes place. During this phenomenon, the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun but does not completely obscure it, leaving a bright outer rim of sunlight visible around the Moon’s silhouette. The result is a striking ring-like glow in the sky, making it one of the most visually captivating celestial events.

This annular solar eclipse will not be visible in India but can be observed in parts of Antarctica, southern Africa and South America. According to Indian Standard Time (IST), the eclipse will begin at 3:26:06 PM and conclude at 7:57 PM. Observers located along the eclipse path are expected to witness the dramatic “ring of fire” phase when the Sun appears as a blazing circle surrounding the darkened Moon.

Astronomers advise skywatchers to use certified solar viewing glasses or indirect viewing methods to safely observe the eclipse. As the first solar eclipse of 2026, the event marks a significant highlight in this year’s astronomical calendar, offering a rare opportunity to witness the unique alignment of the Sun and Moon in annular formation.
