Protests erupt after Congress leader’s comparison sparks political backlash

February 15, 2026: A political storm has broken out in Maharashtra after state Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal compared Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with Tipu Sultan, stating that both fought against oppression. Sapkal said Tipu Sultan’s resistance against the British should be viewed on par with Shivaji Maharaj’s fight for Swarajya. The remarks triggered protests across the state, with BJP leaders and several Hindu organisations accusing him of insulting Maratha pride and Maharashtra’s historical legacy. A case has been registered against Sapkal in Pune.

Demonstrations were held in multiple areas, with protestors raising slogans and burning posters. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis criticised the statement as “shameful,” asserting that Shivaji Maharaj symbolises honour and self-rule for the state. The controversy initially began over the display of Tipu Sultan’s image in a civic office but soon escalated into a broader political confrontation.

Meanwhile, Asaduddin Owaisi defended Tipu Sultan, highlighting his resistance against British rule and citing historical references to his legacy. The episode has intensified ideological divisions in Maharashtra, turning into a larger debate over history, identity and political narratives ahead of upcoming elections.
