SC Hears Plea Against Sonam Wangchuk’s NSA Detention

Supreme Court to resume hearing on January 12

January 8, 2025: The Supreme Court on Monday continued hearing a petition challenging the NSA detention of Ladakh-based social activist Sonam Wangchuk. The apex court said the matter will be taken up again on January 12.

Wangchuk’s wife has moved the court seeking his immediate release, contending that the preventive detention was unjustified. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioner, argued that Wangchuk has always worked to uphold peace in Ladakh and that crucial facts were overlooked before invoking the NSA.

During the hearing, Sibal also played video clips in court showing Wangchuk appealing for calm and communal harmony in the region. The submissions aimed to demonstrate that the activist posed no threat to public order, contrary to the grounds cited for his detention.
