Delhi breaches 45°C, Rajasthan sizzles at 47.3°C; IMD forecasts relief from Thursday with rain in the north and monsoon showers intensifying in the southern and northeastern states.

As temperatures soared across North India on Monday, the region endured one of its most intense heatwaves this summer. Delhi recorded highs over 45°C in several areas, with the mercury peaking at 45.3°C in Ayanagar and 44.9°C in Ridge, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Despite IMD’s earlier warnings, residents found little respite, with the “real feel” touching nearly 49°C due to scorching winds and dry conditions.

- Safdarjung: 43.3°C
- Palam: 44.3°C
- Lodi Road: 43.3°C
- Ridge: 44.9°C

The IMD warned that Tuesday could be hotter, possibly breaching the 45°C mark again, as heatwave conditions persist.
“Most of the northwestern plains, including Delhi-NCR, are likely to experience heatwave conditions for the next four days,” said IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava, speaking to ANI.
🔥 Heatwave Extends Across Northern India
- Haryana: Sirsa (46.4°C), Rohtak (45.6°C), Hisar (44°C)
- Punjab: Samrala (46.1°C), Ferozepur (44°C), Patiala (42.9°C)
- Rajasthan: Sri Ganganagar recorded a sweltering 47.3°C, the hottest in the region

Chandigarh, the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana, also saw its hottest day of the season at 43.8°C.
IMD has issued warnings of warm nights in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh, meaning temperatures may not drop significantly even after sunset.
🌩️ Relief on the Horizon for Delhi
The weather department forecasts a possible change beginning Thursday, with light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds expected in the national capital. Post-Thursday, no further heatwave conditions are predicted in Delhi until at least June 15.

While the north struggles with dry heat, the southern and northeastern states are preparing for heavy rainfall, as the monsoon advances.
Rain is expected in:
- Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura
- Kerala (interior), Karnataka (coastal & interior), Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal
- Odisha
- Coastal Andhra Pradesh
The hot and humid weather is forecast to persist in Bihar, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Gangetic West Bengal on Tuesday.
