Scorching Summer Grips North India: 21 Cities Cross 42°C, Barmer Hits Record 45.6°C

Severe heat wave conditions sweep across Delhi, Rajasthan, MP, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Odisha as temperatures soar unusually high in early April.

April 6, 2025: A blistering heatwave has taken hold across North and Central India, with 21 cities recording temperatures above 42 degrees Celsius today. The heat is expected to persist in Delhi and surrounding regions for the next three days, meteorologists warn.

The hot spell stretches across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and even parts of Odisha, with temperatures exceeding seasonal norms by 3 to 6.9 degrees Celsius in many places.

🔥 Delhi Braces for More Heat

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a drop in wind speed is contributing to the sweltering conditions in Delhi. Morning surface winds are expected at 8–10 km/h, slowing to 4–6 km/h during peak afternoon hours. Winds may rise slightly in the evening, but relief remains minimal.

Barmer in Rajasthan registered a scorching 45.6°C, the highest temperature ever recorded in the region during the first week of April — 6.8°C above normal. The IMD flagged this as a significant climate anomaly for the region.

⚠️ Widespread Heat Wave Alerts

The IMD has issued heat wave alerts across several states:

  • Gujarat (April 6–10) – With severe heat wave conditions over Saurashtra and Kutch
  • Rajasthan (April 6–10) – Isolated to widespread areas to be impacted
  • Other affected areas: Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh

These regions are expected to face isolated to widespread heat wave conditions, particularly in afternoons with little to no relief during the nights.

Citizens are advised to stay hydrated, avoid peak sun hours, and take precautions against heat stroke as the mercury continues to rise across large swaths of India this April.
