Scuffle Outside Parliament, Rahul Gandhi Accuses BJP MPs of Threats

The clash between Rahul Gandhi and BJP MPs escalates tensions as allegations fly after an MP is injured during the confrontation.

December 19, 2024: Rahul Gandhi has strongly refuted allegations made by BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi that the Congress leader injured him during a scuffle outside Parliament’s Makar Dawar on Thursday morning. Gandhi claimed that it was a group of BJP MPs who tried to block his entry, pushed him, and issued threats, including to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

“I was trying to go inside, but BJP MPs were trying to stop me. They pushed me away and threatened me,” Gandhi told reporters. “Yes, they also threatened Mr Kharge, but we are not deterred by such behaviour. This is Parliament, and we have the right to enter,” he added. Gandhi also suggested that the incident might have been caught on camera.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi alleged that he was injured after being caught in the altercation. Sarangi claimed that Gandhi pushed another individual, who then fell on him, causing him to hit his head. Speaking from a wheelchair while receiving medical attention, Sarangi said, “Rahul Gandhi pushed an MP who fell on me, after which I fell down. I was standing near the stairs when the incident occurred.”

Backdrop of the Incident

The incident occurred amid heightened tensions between the ruling BJP and opposition parties over remarks made by Home Minister Amit Shah during a debate on the Constitution. Shah’s comment, “It has become the fashion to say ‘Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar…’ If they (the opposition) took God’s name so many times, they will get a place in heaven,” sparked outrage among opposition leaders, with the Congress leading the charge against the BJP.
