Second Batch of Indian Deportees from the US Arrives in Amritsar
Amritsar (Punjab), February 16: A second flight carrying Indian nationals deported from the United States landed at Amritsar Airport on Sunday, marking another major deportation effort since US President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann assured that proper arrangements had been made for the deportees, who would stay in Amritsar for a few hours before heading to their respective states, with travel arrangements already facilitated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
“Our children are coming back home, and no one will go hungry. We have made full arrangements, including temporary stays. They will remain here for a few hours before departing to their respective states,” Mann said during a press conference in Amritsar on Saturday.
CM Bhagwant Mann took a strong stance against the Centre, accusing it of deliberately choosing Amritsar as the landing site for deported individuals to tarnish Punjab’s reputation.
“There is a conspiracy to defame Punjab and Punjabis. The first plane landed in Amritsar, and now a second plane has arrived here. The MEA should explain the criteria used to select Amritsar as the landing site,” Mann said.
This is the second such deportation flight following Trump’s renewed crackdown on illegal immigration. On February 5, another US Air Force plane carrying Indian migrants who entered the US illegally landed in Amritsar.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that India is willing to take back its nationals who have entered the US illegally, while also calling for a joint effort to dismantle the human trafficking networks responsible for misleading people.
“Those staying illegally in other countries have no legal right to be there. If they are verified Indian citizens, India is ready to take them back,” PM Modi said at a joint press conference with President Trump after their bilateral talks.
The Indian Prime Minister also highlighted how many deported individuals were victims of human traffickers, lured with false promises.
“These are people from ordinary families who were misled with big dreams. We must attack this entire system of human trafficking together. The US and India should work to eliminate this ecosystem at its roots. We are confident that President Trump will fully cooperate with India in this mission,” Modi added.
With the crackdown on illegal immigration intensifying, more deportation flights from the US to India are expected in the coming weeks.
