Reported slight at Kochi event highlights internal churn ahead of Kerala polls

January 23, 2026: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is likely to skip an upcoming meeting called by the party high command to review preparations for the Kerala Assembly elections, bringing internal differences within the Congress into focus ahead of the crucial polls. According to reports, Tharoor is unhappy with both the state and central leadership following what he perceived as an “insult” at a Mahapanchayat event in Kochi, attended by Rahul Gandhi.

Issues reportedly arose at the Kochi programme over seating arrangements and the order of speakers. Tharoor was allegedly told that only Rahul Gandhi would speak after him, but several other leaders eventually addressed the gathering as well. The deviation from the stated plan, coupled with Rahul Gandhi not mentioning Tharoor by name during his speech, was seen as a public slight given Tharoor’s seniority and stature in the party, deepening his dissatisfaction.

Sources said Tharoor has shared his disappointment with close associates, viewing the episode as part of a broader pattern of neglect within the organisation. While he is expected to skip the election-related meeting, Tharoor is scheduled to attend the Kerala Literature Festival later on Thursday. The Congress has not yet issued an official response to the reports surrounding his absence or the alleged rift.
