Shimla To Build Asia's Longest Ropeway: 13.79-Km Aerial Link to Carry 2,000 Passengers Per Hour
April 2, 2025: Shimla is gearing up for a major transformation in public transport and tourism infrastructure with the construction of Asia’s longest ropeway — the Tara Devi-Sanjauli Ropeway Project. Spanning 13.79 km, the aerial transit system will have the capacity to transport 2,000 passengers per hour in both directions.

Estimated at a cost of ₹1,734.40 crore, the project is being executed by the Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the Himachal Pradesh government. The ropeway will feature 660 cabins, each accommodating 8–10 passengers, with cabins arriving at stations every 2–3 minutes.
Once operational, it will be the second-longest ropeway in the world, after Bolivia’s 32-km system, and is poised to be a game-changer for both residents and tourists.
The New Development Bank is financing 80% of the project, and advance tenders have already been cleared. With preparatory work underway, the ropeway is expected to significantly cut down road congestion, improve air quality, and boost eco-friendly tourism in Shimla.
